Moto2 Styria FP1: Marco Bezzecchi heads FP1

Marco Bezzecchi lead the FP1 session in Styria by a mere 0.080.

Marco Bezzechi is aiming to get his title charge back on track in Styria, the place he won his first Moto2 race at last year in the steward’s office. The Italian has been heavily pipped for a MotoGP seat with Motorsport.com confirming he had signed to Petronas SRT for 2022 and Pablo Nieto confirming they are in talks with him to go to VR46, it’s all very interesting in the world of silly season, but that’s why we love it!

‘Bez’ led the session just 0.080 seconds over Augusto Fernandez in second place, the Spanish rider taking his first podium since 2019 last time out after some strong showings of pace and form, these performances are confidence-inspiring and he looks to have re-found his mojo which was lost in 2020, in third place was Aron Canet, the Boscoscuro Aspar rider finishing in an impressive third place.

Lorenzo Dalla Porta is a name who has been under the radar this year, he’s not been able to score points in the last six races with a DSQ and four consecutive DNF’s holding him back but he is doing seriously well, massively underrated and appreciated taking solid top 10’s and now top 5’s in the free practice and qualifying sessions before suffering some poor luck during races, let’s see how this one unfurls.

Rounding off the top 5 was Sam Lowes ahead of Ai Ogura, Ogura really showing what he’s made of this year as a rookie with plenty of top 10 finishes of boast about. In P7 and P8 was a rare duo of Remy Gardner and Raul Fernandez, we have become accustomed to seeing them in the top two so to see them in the lower end of the rankings is a surprise.

Stefano Manzi and Jorge Navarro rounded off the top 10 with Celestino Vietti in a strong P12.

Jake Dixon got off to a very strong start to the session but unfortunately has found himself down in P15, he had a great two races here last year so let’s see what he can do.
