MotoGP: Andrea Dovizioso still within title reach

Andrea Dovizioso could still well and truly be crowned the 2020 MotoGP World Champion, despite his inconsistency this season.

Andrea Dovizioso is still within title reach, just 15 points behind championship leader Joan Mir as we head into the Teruel round at the same track in Alcañiz, Aragon.

The advantage of back-to-back rounds is that teams and riders have much more usable data from just a week ago, meaning they can tweak and fix what was wrong last time out to aim for a better result.

In Dovizioso’s case, he needs to qualify higher than P13, he missed out on Q2 after being beaten by teammate Danilo Petrucci who took advantage of Dovizioso’s split stream to take the Q2 spot, Dovizioso blamed Petrucci but in reality, this is Dovizioso’s fault for being in Q1 in the first place.

He was positive about the championship charge, despite taking P7 at Aragon where he struggles on the Ducati as the bike is not able to corner as well as it’s Yamaha, Honda or Suzuki counterparts, “We brought our maximum this weekend, especially at Aragon as it is hard to overtake riders, at the end, I did not have the speed and was losing too much in the corners, I expected to drop off down the order but I did not.” Said Dovizioso.

“I think when you start from P13, [P7] is ok, especially at Aragon.”

15 points is not that much of a bridge for Dovizioso to cross to take the title lead, but he needs to start beating Joan Mir, cursing the crash at Barcelona which was not his fault, “We are still there [in the championship fight], I am happy about that, my championship approach is to work well and fight. The points I lost in Barcelona are very heavy but the MotoGP championship this year is crazy, every race is crazier than the last and we will fight until the end.”

Dovizioso will leave Ducati at the end of the year and it has been confirmed he has MotoGP testing offers on the table with a possible racing return in 2022.
