Martin on Pole for MotoGP Austrian GP, Bagnaia and Marquez on front row
Jorge Martin has taken pole position for the Austrian Grand Prix, with Francesco Bagnaia and Marc Marquez starting alongside him on the front row of the grid.
Martin took a relatively comfortable pole position, just over a tenth of a second clear of Bagnaia behind, despite having a minor injury on his finger after an accident at home. Bagnaia was on provisional pole position going into the final run, but Martin eventually set a record-breaking lap around the Red Bull Ring with the new layout, and will start ahead of Bagnaia in both the Sprint Race and Grand Prix.
Jack Miller starts from fifth place, an incredibly surprising result after the last few races, where he has struggled aboard the KTM. He is sandwiched between the two Aprilia’s, with Aleix Espargaro in front, and Maverick Vinales just behind. Franco Morbidelli would also make it into Q2, continuing a relatively positive run of results.
However, the biggest surprise of Qualifying, would be Pedro Acosta’s failure to make it out of Q1, the Spaniard will be starting from 14th this weekend, with Fabio Quartararo just behind in 15th as the top Yamaha. Johann Zarco would finish as the top Honda rider once again, albeit in 17th place, with the rest of the Honda fleet just behind.
Fabio Di Giannantonio won’t be competing this weekend after a huge accident in Friday Practice.
Jorge Martin leads the championship by just a small handful of points over Francesco Bagnaia, the pair starting alongside one another this weekend. The MotoGP Austrian Sprint Race starts at 14:00pm on Saturday afternoon, UK Time.
