Moto3 Qatar Combined FP3: Izan Guevara fastest heading into qualifying

Izan Guevara has a point to prove this year and is doing all he can to show his speed.

2020 Junior Moto3 World Champion Izan Guevara heads into this season as one of the championship favourites following a year of learning last year that included a victory at COTA, this weekend in Qatar he’s looked solid all weekend long and will lead the lightweight class into qualifying thanks to a strong lap time set in FP2 yesterday, he leads a field made up of FP2 times with a small number of riders improving their times this morning in the cooler FP3 session.

John McPhee starts his year well in second place ahead of the Le0pard duo of Dennis Foggia then Tatsuki Suzuki, Foggia looked to be on rails all session long taking massive lumps out of his lap time lap after lap even disposing of his teammate with ease, his blue machine once again seemingly finding power from thin air to blast past the competition.

Rounding out the top 5 was Sergio Garcia with Andrea Migno in tow, both riders were able to secure themselves a spot in Q2 thanks to their lap time set in the FP2 session yesterday evening running 0.6 seconds from the leader of Guevara, Kaito Toba was the seventh-placed rider getting through to Q2 from a rapid lap in this mornings session ahead of Jaume Masia.

The top 10 was closed by Carlos Tatay and Deniz Oncu, the Turkish rider setting a late time to get through to Q2 this morning, if he had relied on yesterday’s FP2 time he would’ve been forced to go via Q1, joining them in Q2 are Xavier Artigas, Riccardo Rossi, Ryusei Yamanaka and fastest rookie Joel Kelso, the Australian rider the only rookie to make it through to the Q2 session with last years rival Daniel Holgado the first in Q1 missing out by just 0.046 seconds.

Some names forced to go via Q1 include Lorenzo Fellon, Stefano Nepa and Ayumu Sasaki who put in a time worthy of Q2 but lost it due to a yellow flag.
