MotoGP: Andrea Dovizioso, MotoGP title leader with just 76 points

After 7 races, Andrea Dovizioso leads the MotoGP standings in the lowest point scoring MotoGP season ever.

Before MotoGP came to Misano, Fabio Quartararo led the MotoGP standings with 70 points in 6 races meaning out of a possible 150 points on the table, he scored less than half. This was before Andrea Dovizioso pulled off a *magnificent* P7 at Misano and Quartararo crashed twice to give Dovizioso the title lead, gaining just 6 points over Quartararo, leading by 76 points out of a possible 175 meaning Dovizioso has dropped a staggering 99 points so far in 7 races, a move unheard of.

To put this into perspective, in the 2019 MotoGP season after 7 races, Marc Marquez led the MotoGP standings with 140 points with 1 DNF to his name from P1, if Marquez had taken the 25 points dropped at COTA he would’ve led by 165 points, more than double Dovizioso’s current tally of 76.

There is a dark horse emerging in the 2020 title fight, his name is Joan Mir, in just three races Mir has scored 49 points, compared to Dovizioso’s 45 and Quartararo’s 11 points in 3 races. At Misano Joan Mir jumped from P8 in the standings to P4, just 16 points from the title lead, if it wasn’t for Mir having his race win at Austria stolen from him, he would only be 2 points behind Dovizioso, staggering from the 23-year-old Suzuki rider.

We are seeing an unbelievably inconsistent MotoGP season, the top 9 riders are separated by just 23 points meaning any of the following names; Andrea Dovizioso, Fabio Quartararo, Jack Miller, Joan Mir, Maverick Viñales, Valentino Rossi, Franco Morbidelli, Brad Binder and Takaaki Nakagami could win the MotoGP title.

When racing at Misano, P3 overall man Jack Miller commented after the race saying, “Every guy that went past, I understood where they were in the championship. It’s going through your mind,” highlighting the point that any rider could win the title this season, it is a hugely open playing field and at the moment the best man will win the title.

Joan Mir has the highest points haul of any rider for the last three races so only time will tell…
