Moto3 Sachsenring FP1: John McPhee opens weekend in P1

John McPhee leads the way in the FP1 session at Sachsenring.

John McPhee opens his weekend in the best way possible taking P1 in the first session of the weekend on German soil, the Scottish rider has failed to score in 5 of the 7 races he has completed this year crashing out of the lead in Catalunya, the Scotsman desperately needs a result as he is in danger of being without a ride in the coming year, McPhee led Tatsuki Suzuki by 0.113 seconds as the Japanese rider makes a rare appearance at the top of the timesheets, the SIC58 rider’s form this year has not been as he’d expect.

Catalan poleman Gabriel Rodrigo took the third position in the session, the Argentinian rider was the fastest man in Catalunya by a long stretch managing a P6 in the race sparking some comments from a Moto3 crew chief who said that the slow riders can now fight at the front in Moto3, make of that what you will. Stefano Nepa was the fourth fastest man, he has taken some strong steps this year and is looking incredibly impressive, we could be seeing him fighting for the top positions in the race very soon!

Moto3 title leader Pedro Acosta put in a late charge in the session to finish in P5 ahead of Dennis Foggia who completed an identical lap time to Filip Salac who was just behind in P7 ahead of his teammate Andrea Migno. Catalunya podium finisher Deniz Oncu arrives in Germany full of confidence after an emotional podium finish on Catalan soil, he’s had a tough year this year crashing when he was in some good positions, this podium will hopefully spur him onto greatness.

Romano Fenati rounded off the top 10 as Jeremy Alcoba took P12, in a surprising but welcome change Lorenzo Fellon who normally laps at the back of the field took a strong P14 only 1.110 seconds from leader McPhee with Catalan race leader Izan Guevara finishing in P20.

Joel Kelso made his Moto3 debut taking last place using the time to gain experience on a new track and new bike.
