MotoGP Valencia: Frankie says pole position in Valencia
Franco Morbidelli has taken a stunning pole position in Valencia as title fighters struggle.
Franco Morbidelli took control of a crazy qualifying session which at one point saw a KTM 1-2-3, then the dust started to settle and the lap times started to tumble down with Maverick Vinales the first man to break KTM’s dominance in the session, topping the session momentarily before Franco Morbidelli snatched the provisional pole position from his hands, like taking candy from a baby.
Eventually, KTM and Vinales were pushed further down the grid with Oliveira finishing the session in P10 from P3 at one point.
Jack Miller was one of the fastest riders in the session, taking second place overall looking utterly wild in the last corner doing all he could to get his Ducati stopped, spinning up the rear tyre to fire it down the straight, he leads the final rider on the front row, Takaaki Nakagami, Nakagami takes yet another front row start in 2020, yet again chasing that first podium, he has said he believes he can take this podium this weekend.
Johann Zarco was the next man up to the mark, leading the second row on the GP19, meaning that 3 of the top 4 riders are on 2019 machinery, he led last years teammate Pol Espargaro in P5 with Pol just 0.033 from Zarco with Maverick Vinales next up on the second row, eventually finishing 0.454 from Morbidelli’s pole time.
Aleix Espargaro places his Aprilia in the front slot of the third row joined by Francesco Bagnaia and Brad Binder, he will be looking to join their inevitable push for the podium spots tomorrow.
Miguel Oliveira has some good company on the fourth row with title fighters Fabio Quartararo and Joan Mir joining him, Mir majorly struggling to put in a time worthy of anything better than last place, he will need to gain at least 5 places to be in with a good position to win the title tomorrow as other title contender Alex Rins starts from way back in P14.
Alex Marquez was also sent to the moon and back with an outrageous hi-side, however heroically he returned to the pits and went back out on his bike, returning a lap later.
