MotoGP Styria: Vinales: “The brakes exploded”
Maverick Vinales is having some rotten luck lately, in today’s tale of luck, Vinales had to jump from his MotoGP bike at 140mph.
During today’s race at the Styrian GP, Maverick Vinales’ brakes “exploded,” causing him to make a split-second decision to jump from his M1 Yamaha, this comes a week after he is nearly hit by the bikes of Franco Morbidelli and Johann Zarco.
Following the accident, the race was red-flagged due to an air fence being destroyed, Vinales was struggling since the early laps of the race with his brakes but didn’t think much of it saying “I started to lose front brake pressure. I was saying, ‘pfft, difficult race’.” Clearly not thinking it could get worse than this.
“In Turn 1, the brakes exploded. I think the parts go away on the brakes, so I remained without brakes. I could not stop the bike, impossible. I understood very well that the brake was broken or something, so I decided to jump.” This was confirmed by Alex Marquez who said he had seen parts falling from the M1, very likely to be parts of the brakes.
Being a racer, Vinales did everything he could to continue following issues early on in the race, “I should have stopped, but I didn’t want to stop. I wanted to finish. Even to take 1 point, I gave my maximum all the time, so I stayed on the track.”
Vinales has been in the MotoGP class for many years now however confirmed this time round were “the worst two races” he has ever had, “I mean, we lose and we win together, so we are going to try to come back stronger. Now we have to forget these two races in Austria. For sure, these are the worst two races I have had in MotoGP.” He was not alone however, all the Yamaha’s struggled at Austria with Valentino Rossi finishing as the fastest Yamaha in ninth.
Vinales and MotoGP fans alike will be hoping he can have a safer Misano with less dangerous crashes.
