MotoGP – Yamaha request to open their engines

Following their engine struggles at Jerez where some of their riders had to use all five engines in their allocation, Yamaha have formally requested to open their engines on safety grounds.

It seems the culprit they are looking to replace is a valve problem, and they called a Manufacturers Association meeting, but it seems the other manufacturers are not keen for Yamaha to be allowed to open the engines, and are yet to make a decision. The move comes after one engine each belonging to both Valentino Rossi and Maverick Vinales were sent back to Iwata in an emergency. There were engine failures for Rossi in the first Jerez event, and then it was followed up by Franco Morbidelli’s engine in the second, triggering panic before Brno.

It seems as though the engine issue is that bad that in Brno, every Yamaha engine has been running on reduced revs, as manufacturers are not allowed to touch their engines in 2020 as a cost-saving measure due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Despite this issue, it has not yet set Yamaha back as they still lead the championship with Fabio Quartararo after four rounds.
