Moto2 Assen Qualifying: Raul Fernandez on pole again
Raul Fernandez takes yet another Moto2 pole position at Assen.
Raul Fernandez has stormed to another pole position in Moto2 at Assen, the stunning rookie continues to impress many and has been rumoured to have signed a MotoGP contract with Tech3 according to Motorsport.com, Herve Poncharal went on to deny this but that’s exactly what you’d expect a team manager to do, we will see what happens on this story. We did see another Red Bull KTM Ajo 1-2 in the class with Fernandez’s time only 0.010 seconds from Johann Zarco’s long-standing lap record from 2015, will it ever be beaten?! We don’t know but we do know it’ll stand until next year, Zarco’s time standing for 7 years in Moto2, impressive.
As we’ve mentioned, Moto2’s most consistent riders Raul Fernandez and Remy Gardner took yet another 1-2 in the session starting from the front row, Fernandez will be aiming to not repeat last weekends mistake of crashing early on trying to stay with Gardner, if he wants to win the title he needs to be able to take the points, but he’s also a rookie and is expected to make mistakes.
Sam Lowes was promoted to third place late on in the session after his teammate Augusto Fernandez lost his provisional P3 due to a yellow flag infringement, eventually taking P8 in the session.
Aron Canet leads row 2, the Spanish rider has been in strong form lately and this result theoretically will be enough for him to battle for the third podium spot with the first two booked in for the Ajo boys, joining him on row two are Hector Garzo and Ai Ogura who stormed his way to P6, a majorly impressive start for the rookie who’s spent his time in the shadow of Fernandez due to the achievements of the poleman.
Sitting just behind Canet on the grid is fellow Boscoscuro rider Jorge Navarro who’s joined by A Fernandez and Lorenzo Dalla Porta, massively impressed with the improvement the 2019 Moto3 champion has shown these last few races with Tony Arbolino rounding off the top 10.
Further down the order there were some surprising riders who were unable to get out of the Q1 session with Joe Roberts starting from P19 and Jake Dixon starting from P22.
