Pedro Acosta wins a stunning Moto3 thriller in Austria.
Pedro Acosta went head to head against title contender Sergio Garcia in the lightweight class with the duo going right down to the wire with both riders ‘crashing’ at the penultimate corner, Acosta was able to save said front end crash with Garcia going down into the gravel before recovering to still finish in second place, the duo had a huge lead of 14 seconds at the line ahead of the rest of the field allowing Garcia to remount and take silverware.
It was drama from the very start of the race with Deniz Oncu being forced off the grid due to a miscommunication of the Tech3 team who decided to change the tyres of Oncu on the grid with what they thought was 5 minutes to go, unfortunately the team read wrong and they opted to change the tyres with only three minutes to go forcing Oncu to start the race from stone last instead of the pole position he had earned the day prior, eventually coming home in P21.
From the onset of the race Pedro Acosta fought for the lead after starting from fourth place with Maximilian Kofler also making an incredible race start to battle for sixth place, it was a case of Acosta vs Garcia throughout the race with the duo swapping between first and second as Acosta held back and let Garcia control the race, saving Acosta’s tyres and fuel for the latter stages of the race, eventually Acosta decided to strike on the penultimate lap taking the lead of the race going into turn one before the duo made contact into turn three, these youngsters put their races on the line to battle for gold with Acosta once again emerging on top taking his fifth consecutive win at the Red Bull Ring ahead of Garcia.
The battle for third place came down to the last corner with Masia leaving the door wide open for Fenati to come through and overtake to take the last podium spot only 0.100 seconds ahead of Masia then Sasaki who has returned from a serious injury and has massively impressed all weekend long, fifth place is more than deserved for the Japanese rider. In sixth place was Darryn Binder who put in a stunning race to finish in sixth after recovering from P17 with blistering speed, a very solid race from the rider many are pipping for a Petronas MotoGP seat for 2022.
Ryusei Yamanaka took home a very strong P7 ahead of Kunii and Kofler as Adrian Fernandez came home in P10, a great ride for the Husqvarna youngster who is expected to line up for the Ajo/Tech3 team for 2022 thanks to his brothers links with the team.
