Moto2 Catalunya FP1: Augusto Fernandez leads a Marc VDS 1-2

Augusto Fernandez was the quickest man this morning on Catalan soil.

Augusto Fernandez’s name is a name absent from the top of timesheets for some time now, thankfully the tides may finally be starting to turn as he finds more confidence in his Kalex Moto2 machine in the Marc VDS team, he impressed hugely in 2019 taking three race wins but has struggled since his move to the Marc VDS team and has crashed out of the last three races with podium pace, hopefully finally he cake that elusive rostrum finish this weekend which has evaded him for so long, he leads teammate Sam Lowes who has contributed to a costly repair bill for the team crashing out of the last two races. Lets hope for the sake of the team he will finish this weekend and get his title fight back on track.

Following the Marc VDS 1-2 is a Red Bull KTM Ajo 3-4, the duo Ajo boys are smashing it out of the park this year leading the championship standings with second-placed Fernandez a full 20 points ahead of Bezzecchi in the title fight, this pairing is fairly untouchable this year and it’ll take a huge resurgence of a rider to be able to beat them to the title. Remy Gardner led the duo in the FP1 session with Fernandez only 0.048 behind his teammate with Bezzecchi rounding off the top 5.

Hector Garzo finished the session in a solid P6, he is another rider who has seemingly lost their way this year following some impressive races last year, only time will tell if he can get back to the front, he lead Bo Bendsneyder as a Petronas duo locked out the P8 and P9 positions as Vierge leads Dixon by just 0.005 seconds, it’s tight in the Petronas camp. Jorge Navarro rounded off the top 10 ahead of ex-teammate Fabio Diggia in P11.
