Moto3 Qatar Test Results Day 3: Red Bull KTM Ajo go 1-2 as Masia breaks lap record
Jaume Masia and rookie Pedro Acosta fire a warning shot to their competitors on day 3.
Day 3 was a quick one in Moto3 with some very impressive names able to keep up with the pace of the class. Jaume Masia has shown he has what it takes to fight for the Moto3 crown this season, he is one of the favourites in the class and returns to KTM riding for the ‘factory’ Red Bull KTM Ajo squad, his lap time of 2’04.263 today obliterated the circuit record set by Aron Canet in 2019 of 2’04.561 by a massive 0.298 setting a new unofficial lap record on the circuit. This is not forgetting his also incredibly rapid teammate Pedro Acosta who is a rookie to the class and the 2020 Red Bull Rookies champion, he finished 0.306 behind his teammate in P2 with a lap time just 0.008 from Canet’s lap record proving the duo are not to be messed with at the Losail International Circuit.
Dennis Foggia occupied the P3 spot today, the ex-teammate to Masia lapping 0.440 from P1 on the Leopard Honda, he finished ahead of Izan Guevara in P4 on the Gas Gas machine. If you don’t know who Guevara is by now you may be living under a rock, the rookie Junior Moto3 World Champion remains with the Aspar team for 2021 after feeling incredibly comfortable in the set up last year, comfortable enough to win the title in his first try, he is now aiming to do the same in the World Championship doubling up on Aspar’s 2020 Moto3 title with Albert Arenas.
The Gresini Racing Moto3 boys haven’t wasted any time getting up to speed with Rodrigo (P5) and Alcoba (P7) acting as the bread in a John McPhee sandwich (P6), the duo will be battling head to head in 2021 with Alcoba looking incredibly promising and Rodrigo not wanting to be beaten by his teammate again this season, Alcoba finished 0.665 from P1.
Romano Fenati was the first rider outside of the 2:04 marker with a lap time of 2’05.103 awarding him P8, he was 0.840 from P1 ahead of Filip Salac in P9. Darryn Binder is another rider who’s adapted very quickly to his surroundings, the younger brother of MotoGP star Brad Binder feeling at home in the Petronas squad and aiming to win more races this season in the lightweight class, he finished in P10 and was 0.885 from P1.
Xavier Artigas is another rider holding much promise, the Moto3 rookie finished in P11 and already boasts a podium in the class following from a stunning display in the Valencia 2019 race when he entered as a wildcard and nearly won, he finishes ahead of Jason Dupasquier who makes a very welcome appearance in P12, the fast Swiss rider remains with the Prustel GP team for 2021 and looks to be extracting more speed from his KTM.
Andrea Migno finished day 3 in P18, the Italian impressing early on in the tests but not finding his feet as well today as he moves to Honda. On rookie watch,we can see Lorenzo Fellon in P21, Andi Farid Izdihar in P26 and Adrian Fernandez in P27.
