MotoGP: Third surgery for Marc Marquez – OFFICIAL
Marc Marquez has gone under the knife a third time, officially confirmed by Honda.
Following the break to his right humerus in July 2020, Marc Marquez has undergone a third surgery on his arm for a pseudarthrosis on the humerus bone, lasting a huge 8 hours. Marquez broke his humerus in the opening round of the 2020 MotoGP season, after having surgery to hold the bones in place with a plate, Marquez opted to try to race the weekend after, just 4 days after his surgery after being given the go-ahead by Doctors to race. Honda also agreed to let the 8 x Champion race with Marquez passing medical tests required to prove he was safe to ride.
He took part in the Saturday FP3 and FP4 sessions, setting times only 1 second off the pace, remarkable given the injury and pain he was going through before doing an out lap in qualifying and returning to the pits, withdrawing from the weekend. Since then, it has gone from bad to worse with a second operation being required due to the plate in his arm breaking, therefore another operation was required to replace the plate, this took Marquez out of contention for the entire 2020 season eyeing a return in 2021.
However, it just keeps getting worse, Honda has confirmed a third operation has taken place, he went to the Hospital Ruber Internacional in Madrid to consult some of the best Doctors in Spain on Thursday with confirmation that an operation has taken place.
The operation was an iliac crest bone graft with a corticoperiosteal free flap which will aid in healing and repairing the bone, this is because the broken humerus is not healing. The two previous surgeries have meant that his humerus has been drilled into multiple times and is not strong enough to repair itself, the bone is not growing meaning drastic action was taken to ensure he will be able to return to racing once again in 2021.
Currently, his anticipated recovery time is 6 months meaning he could miss the first 7 rounds of the 2021 MotoGP season, ruining his title chances once again. We will keep you updated once more information is known.
