European GP: Moto2 quick bits

Valencia strikes again! Championship leads are fragile in 2020, and it’s swung in Moto2 once again after the first race at the Ricardo Tormo circuit. Here are the talking points.
  • The championship has swung back to Bastianini. Once again, Enea Bastianini showed he is by far the most consistent rider in the class this season, with only one solitary DNF at Austria. After the misfortune of other contenders, he leads the championship through sheer consistency.
  • Sam Lowes has made it interesting. Lowes crashed out of 2nd place while putting pressure on Marco Bezzecchi, and suddenly the entire championship changed. Lowes is now on the back foot, no sooner than when he took the lead.
  • Marco Bezzecchi took his first win. Ok, his second win. But he will surely class this as his first ‘true’ win, after he was gifted the win in Austria due to a Jorge Martin penalty after he crossed the line in 2nd. Sky Racing VR46 were so proud.
  • Lorenzo Baldassarri finally returned to the sharp end. After what has been a nightmare year frankly, Baldassarri has found a setting he likes. It’s much too late but confidence has been regained, a positive going into 2021.
  • Luca Marini may have lost the championship. Since Le Mans, when Marini saw more of the French airspace than he would have liked, he has fallen away. No scores, combined with finishes outside the points since then means it will now be a monumental task to overhaul the top two riders.
  • Aron Canet returned inside the points. After losing a good chunk of his little finger in Austria, Canet has been missing from the grid. He returned strongly to finish inside the points, and is still on to be the top rookie of 2020, although Hector Garzo may have something to say about that.
