WSBK News: Jonas Folger to make second wildcard at Estoril
2020 IDM Superbike champion Jonas Folger will make a second wildcard this season in WSBK at Estoril in 2 weeks time.
Speedweek.com have reported that Folger will make a second appearance in WorldSBK at the Portuguese round in Estoril. Jonas Folger returned to full-time racing in 2020 following a racing hiatus due to being diagnosed with Gilbert’s syndrome, this cut his 2018 MotoGP season short where he scored his only podium in the class at Sachsenring.
Since then Folger has been working hard to make a racing return, something which was a challenge given his reputation was damaged following leaving MotoGP, however, slowly but surely he found his feet, signing a testing deal with Yamaha for 2019 and racing numerous Moto2 rounds as a replacement rider.
In 2020, he raced in the IDM Superbike championship and won 100% of the races, a record previously unseen in the class, during the season he has also raced in the World Superbike championship as a wildcard, using it as a job interview. He started races from last place but finished in some very competitive places, P12 in his debut in Race 1, P10 in the Superpole race and P11 in Race 2.
These results were enough to impress and gain him another wildcard in the class in Portugal at the last round of the season, Folger will once again be using this as a job interview to try and score a 2021 full-time ride.
