MotoGP: Valentino Rossi’s potential team in 2022
It is a possibility that Valentino Rossi’s team may debut in the 2022 season.
2022 will be an important year in MotoGP with many team swaps expected. There will be multiple grid slots opened up for 2022 with various manufacturers and teams looking at these, mainly the slots opened by Aprilia. In 2022, Aprilia and Gresini will split, with Aprilia entering MotoGP as a fully fledged factory team instead of an independent factory team under the Gresini name, this will vacate two MotoGP seats should Gresini decide to sell them.
Suzuki have already expressed their interest in a satellite MotoGP team for the 2022 season with Rossi having a connection to Davide Brivio who worked with Valentino Rossi for 6 years at Yamaha. Therefore it would be possible for the VR46 team to iron out an agreement with Suzuki to run two satellite bikes for the 2022 season with Luca Marini and another VR46 rider.
However, it is also rumoured that the VR46 team could take over the Avintia team slots, the team have reportedly run into some financial difficulties meaning they could look to sell up and move on, opening up two more grid slots which could be occupied by the VR46 team but on Ducati’s. Leopard Racing have also confirmed interest in MotoGP, therefore we could see Leopard take over the Avintia slots for 2022 and VR46 join in 2022 also, adding two new teams to the paddock.
The possibility of having a pathway from the CIV/CEV all the way into Moto3, Moto2 then MotoGP would be a lucrative opportunity for Valentino Rossi to be able to expand his legacy in MotoGP, providing a tunnel for riders from the European/italian championships all the way to the top level of motorcycle racing.
At this point, it is only a possibility of having a VR46 MotoGP team with Rossi preferring to concentrate on getting Luca Marini a MotoGP ride first, but it would be silly to say that it is not on the cards.
