Moto3: 2022 rookie profile – Matteo Bertelle

Italian Matteo Bertelle makes his full-time debut in Moto3 for 2022 with the Avintia VR46 Team.

Matteo Bertelle is an Italian rider born in Monselice, he has spent the majority of his career racing in the CIV Italian series’ with some seasons spent in the Spanish CEV and three years of work in the Red Bull Rookies.

The youngster has been signed up to ride within the Avintia VR46 squad for 2022 and is racing under the VR46 banner which could see him become a member of the VR46 Riders Academy in the future after making an appearance for their Bardhal squad at Misano in a wildcard, coming home in a respectable P18 on his debut in the World Championship.

In 2021 Bertelle has racked up a series of victories and podiums in the Italian CIV championship alongside a shocking win in Sachsenring in this years Red Bull Rookies campaign after the front runners decided to play bowling with one another.

Bertelle’s career has solely been spent on tarmac, first getting his taste of the asphalt in 2011 and rapidly progressing through the MiniMoto categories before graduating to a pre-Moto3 125cc in 2017 in the Italian CIV championship, this would be a title he won in his first attempt and would open the doors to join the SIC58 Squadra Corse for 2018 in the European Talent cup where he would win two races at Jerez and place P5 overall.

The team saw speed and talent within him and would promote him to the CEV Moto3 Junior World Championship in 2019, he also gained himself a spot in the Red Bull Rookies championship for this year and took a season-best result of third but was forced to miss multiple rounds which disrupted his season greatly. Over in the CEV he took home P23 overall with multiple points finishes and a season-best result of P8 in Estoril.

He continued to race Moto3 machinery in 2020 in the Italian CIV Moto3 championship and the Red Bull Rookies and suffered a disappointing Rookies campaign after it was once again disrupted, being forced to miss four races. Thankfully in 2021 he would be able to piece the puzzle together and battle against the best in a superb season finishing in P7 overall in the rookies with a consistent season which includes the previously mentioned race win in Germany. He also battled for the CIV Moto3 championship and led the standings going into the final round however a crash in free practice hampered his weekend as he was riding with pain, losing the title but coming incredibly close.

In 2021 he made his Moto3 World Championship debut as mentioned and also completed the final round of the FIM CEV Moto3 series at Valencia coming home with a P8 and P4, his consistency over 2021 has shone through and this underrated youngster will be hoping to make a splash going into next year, there are no doubts that he’s got what it takes.
