Marquez masters his way to Pole for MotoGP Aragon GP, Martin crashes in Qualifying
Marc Marquez stormed to pole by almost an entire second ahead of Pedro Acosta, who will start the race from second on the grid. Francesco Bagnaia starts third, with Jorge Martin just behind after a crash early on in Qualifying.
Marc Marquez took pole position aboard his Gresini Ducati Desmosedici GP23, setting a lap time of 1:46.766
With some overnight rain washing away the grip laid down in the Practice sessions, the riders found the Aragon circuit to be quite challenging, with Jorge Martin notably crashing at Turn 5, losing the front of his Prima Pramac after a late downshift into the tight left-hander that the riders already approach leaning into, after the fast Turn 4 left-hander.
Marc Marquez would set a couple of lap times, both of which were nearly a full second ahead of the rest of the field, as Marquez hopes for his home circuit in Aragon to potentially be the circuit where he claims his maiden victory for Ducati.
Pedro Acosta would follow close behind Marquez aboard his Red Bull GasGas Tech3 KTM, setting an extraordinary lap to put him second on the grid, beating Bagnaia’s time by just 0.002’s. This would be particularly remarkable after Acosta was forced to fight his way out of Q1, and then made it all the way to the front row of the grid.
Elsewhere, the other Ducati’s of Alex Marquez and Franco Morbidelli would sit in fifth and sixth, despite being a full second behind Marc Marquez’s time. The VR46 Ducati riders would struggle, unable to make it out of Q1 as they continue what has been a difficult season, with little to no signs of progress.
Surprisingly, a Honda rider would make it into Q2, that being Johann Zarco aboard his LCR Honda. Zarco will be starting the race from 10th place and sets his sights on some points, after having to endure an incredibly tough season racing at the back of the field with the Honda, this may be one of the only chances he has to race this high up the grid.
Brad Binder would finish in seventh aboard his Red Bull Factory KTM, albeit almost two seconds down on Marc Marquez, as he was closely followed by the Trackhouse and Factory Aprilia riders, with Miguel Oliveira and Raul Fernandez starting in eighth and ninth, and Aleix Espargaro and Maverick Vinales starting in 11th and 12th, with Espargaro almost three seconds off the top time.
