MotoGP Algarve FP1: Newly crowned champion Fabio Quartararo leads

Fabio Quartararo opens the weekend in Portimao on top leading FP1.

1-2 in the championship go 1-2 in FP1 at Portimao with Fabio Quartararo leading Francesco Bagnaia, the pair split by just 0.045 seconds by the end of the session which was mostly lead by Francesco Bagnaia until a late laptime from the Frenchman demoted him to second place. The duo led Jack Miller in third, the Ducati man has history at the track of impressing with a podium here in 2020, there’s no doubt he will be aiming for glory once again.

Rounding out the top five were the Suzuki Ecstar duo of Alex Rins then Joan Mir, Rins debuting a brand new shoulder camera to give viewers an incredible view of the action from the riders POV, you can watch footage of that here.

Luca Marini is continuing to surpass expectations in sixth place, this comes off the back of a front row start last time out in Misano, his confidence is growing and the results are improving as we’d hope, very excited to see how this progresses, only 0.010 seconds back was Pol Espargaro on the Repsol Honda, the Spaniard took his maiden podium for the Japanese manufacturer last time out and will be hoping to repeat the same again this weekend.

Rounding out the top 10 were Maverick Vinales ahead of Franco Morbidelli on his old bike and his teammate Aleix Espargaro, the Aprilia’s looking competitive despite the cooler temperatures in Portugal, just outside the top 10 were the LCR duo of Alex Marquez and Takaaki Nakagami.
