MotoGP Assen FP2: Maverick Vinales goes fastest in FP2

Maverick Vinales leads the FP2 session marred by weather.

The MotoGP FP2 session was a write off with the rain coming down and spoiling the festivities midway through the session. For many this was the perfect chance to put in some laps in wet conditions and gain data in case we experience this more across the weekend, one man who took advantage of this was Alex Rins who put in the most laps of all the riders totalling 15, he finished up in P7.

We also saw a horrific high side from Marc Marquez who was fired out of the seat landing directly on his damaged arm, thankfully there is no proper damage to the bone as it was deemed to be fully healed, now the worry is his shoulder injury which is still plaguing him years on from 2018.

Maverick Vinales once again led the way, a stark difference to last week when he finished in last place at the Sachsenring, he is now running the same set-up as his teammate Fabio Quartararo and it is very clearly working well for him as he lead both FP1 and FP2 today, the latter session he led Miguel Oliveira by a mere 0.159 seconds as his teammate Fabio Quartararo joins him in the top 3.

Marc Marquez set the fourth-fastest time before his crash, he only completed four laps all session long opting not to go out following his crash in the wet which is the smart move given the circumstances, he crashed following Joan Mir who would finish just behind him in P5, Mir showing some decent speed after not impressing much this year showing less consistency than last year, this consistency was the main reason he took the title as he outshone every other rider, if he can improve on this we will see him back on top once again.

Johann Zarco is once again the fastest Ducati but this time he was joined by a Ducati in the top 10 thanks to Jack Miller in P8, the pair acting as the bread in an Alex Rins sandwich.

Rounding off the top 10 were brothers Aleix and Pol Espargaro with the Honda rider suffering yet another crash during the session.
