Moto3 Styria FP1: Sergio Garcia returns in P1 after the break
Sergio Garcia was the fastest rider after the summer break leading FP1.
MotoGP has finally returned to our television screens in Austria, picking up where they left off in Assen a whole five weeks ago which feels like a lifetime ago! For Moto3 some things never change with Sergio Garcia and Pedro Acosta at the top of the timesheets with an impressive four riders within 0.100 seconds including the returning Ayumu Sasaki who has missed Sachsenring and Assen with an incredibly serious head injury suffered in Catalunya.
The lap times were way off the pace this morning with Sergio Garcia setting the fastest time of 1:37.143 which is a second and a half off the lap record of 1:35.778 set by Tony Arbolino, this is positive for the class as it means many riders have a lot of scope to improve going into this afternoons FP2 session.
John McPhee was the second-fastest rider in the session behind Garcia only 0.046 seconds behind, rather timely given his teammate’s recent retirement with Pedro Acosta only 0.004 seconds further back from McPhee. For McPhee he needs to be able to string together some solid results, over his career we have seen him suffer a lot with bad luck but if he wants to get a Moto2 ride for 2022 he needs to show he is worthy of a seat.
As previously mentioned Ayumu Sasaki was straight back into the top 4 this morning within the 0.100 bracket proving that he hasn’t lost any of his speed after a very impressive season so far, running as high as third place in the standings before his scary accident in Catalunya, the team are incredibly impressed with the Japanese rider and there’s no doubt he will be back in form during the race, he led Romano Fenati then Darryn Binder in P6.
Niccolo Antonelli was the seventh quickest rider in the session following a decent start which saw him lead, he suffered a crash mid-session but escaped unharmed, he was noted to be struggling with some ankle pain but that’s nothing a trip to the Clinica Mobile cannot fix! Antonelli led Masia by a mere 0.030 with Andrea Migno and Gabriel Rodrigo rounding out the top 10, the latter spending a lot of time training on a Yamaha R1 recently.
Title contender Dennis Foggia ended up in P11, the Italian’s record of only scoring points when he’s on the podium continuing to stand with some strong results in the past few races.
