MotoGP Catalunya FP2: Johann Zarco on top in Barcelona

Frenchman Johann Zarco takes the top step in the FP2 session in Catalunya, the man sat in P2 overall in the championship standings is showing some good speed as the top 10 break into the 1:39’s on the new layout of the circuit, there’s no doubt we will see mid 1:38’s come qualifying tomorrow slashing another 0.700 seconds off the current lap record.
Ex-teammates (and possible future teammates) Franco Morbidelli and Fabio Quartararo finish the session just behind Zarco, the Yamaha duo showing some decent pace this weekend with Quartararo the favourite for the race win by a long stretch, but this is MotoGP so we all know that it’ll be Aleix Espargaro winning come Sunday because MotoGP is unpredictable.
Fresh off a newly signed three-year deal we see Brad Binder sat in P4, KTM’s chassis upgrades have allowed the KTM riders to preserve their tyres much better giving them more feel and less degradation, their new fuel mix also has improved their top speed, these updates showed their capabilities last weekend with Oliveira on the podium, now it’s Binders turn, Binder lead Francesco Bagnaia and Maverick Vinales in P6.
Jack Miller was the seventh placed rider, the Australian rider not looking too happy at the moment with his set up at Catalunya but was able to scrape a solid P7 position at the end of the session ahead of rookie Enea Bastianini who is praying he doesn’t crash on the grid again this week.
It temporarily happened in FP1 and it’s happened again in FP2, both the Espargaro boys have finished the session with identical lap times, rather strange for it to happen once, never mind twice! Their positioning was decided by their second fastest lap time with Aleix leading Pol.
On the other side of the garage to Bastianini we see Luca Marini, the Italian has been showing some speed finishing in P13 ahead of Oliveira then Marc Marquez.
Further down it’s hard not to think that this will be Valentino Rossi’s last year as he once again finishes in P19.
