Bastianini Blitzes the field to MotoGP British GP Glory, beating Martin and Bagnaia
Enea Bastianini blitzed the field to take MotoGP British GP Glory, he comprehensively beat Jorge Martin and Francesco Bagnaia to do the double this weekend, winning the Sprint Race and Grand Prix.
It was a mostly clean getaway on the opening lap, as Francesco Bagnaia seized the lead from Aleix Espargaro in the opening couple of corners. Brad Binder would have his fuel management setting switched on at the start, crawling off the line and falling right to the back of the field.
At Turn 6, both of the Trackhouse Aprilia’s would collide with one another, both ending up in the gravel and ending the race for both Miguel Oliveira and Raul Fernandez.
Fabio Di Giannantonio looked scarily similar to Valentino Rossi during the Grand Prix, not just because of the livery and helmet, but because the Italian managed to move up multiple positions on the opening lap, outbraking Pedro Acosta in the first half of the race, after the Spaniard had done the same to him earlier in the race.
After many laps of each rider conserving their tyres, the gaps started to open up as some riders came through. Bagnaia led the way from Martin just half a second behind, with Aleix Espargaro clutching on to the leaders in the first half of the race. However, the Aprilia would eventually start to struggle for grip, with Enea Bastianini picking the Spaniard off at the high speed section of Copse.
Di Giannantonio would duel with Alex Marquez for the better part of a lap, with the VR46 rider eventually coming out on top after the pair duelled at every corner for nearly the entire lap.
Bagnaia would eventually lose a lot of grip, almost crashing at one point as he lost the lead to Jorge Martin, and just a lap or so later, would lose second place to his teammate Bastianini.
Enea Bastianini would lap around one second quicker than those around him in the closing stages, clearly conserving his tyre grip far better than other riders, coming through on Martin with just two laps remaining to take the British Grand Prix victory.
Honda would score one of their better results of the season, with Luca Marini finishing 15th and inside the points. Joan Mir was running even higher initially before retiring from the race at the halfway stage.
KTM’s Pedro Acosta had a relatively quiet race, coming over the line in 9th place as the leading KTM, the Spaniard and the rest of the KTM riders just didn’t appear to quite have the pace at this high speed circuit.
Fabio Quartararo would finish 11th as the top Yamaha, with teammate for this weekend Remy Gardner finishing 18th as Alex Rins was forced to sit this weekend out due to injury.
Jorge Martin reclaims the lead of the championship, just three points in front of Francesco Bagnaia. However, surprisingly, Enea Bastianini moves to just 46 points down on the leading duo, with 10 Grands Prix and 10 Sprint Races remaining.
