WorldSBK Indonesia Superpole: Toprak Razgatlıoğlu destroys lap record to take pole
Toprak Razgatlıoğlu has his eyes set on the championship ahead of race one later today.
Toprak Razgatlıoğlu has stormed his way to pole position in Indonesia with blistering pace setting the first-ever 1:32 second lap time at the brand new circuit, the official lap time being a 1:32.877.
The session was hotly contested with Razgatlıoğlu setting the banker lap at the same time as Rea and Redding, the trio being led by the Yamaha man with Rea in tow, Redding in third place, from here the trio of riders would return to their pit boxes to hibernate as the session clocked ticked down.
With six minutes to go the title leaders of Jonathan Rea and Toprak Razgatlıoğlu would emerge from their pit box to attempt to attack for another pole position watch, with scintillating pace Rea would move Toprak aside to lead the session by a huge 0.343 seconds faster than the Yamaha riders team but this wouldn’t be for long. Razgatlıoğlu was out for blood today and he could smell it, instantly responding and improving Rea’s time by an unbelievable 0.324 seconds to register the first 1:32 lap time at the new circuit, Scott Redding qualifying in third.
Leading row two is American Garrett Gerloff, the Texan has been on fire all weekend long looking much more like his former self, he is the ‘best of the rest’ and has been all weekend long, no doubt he will be aiming for a podium finish later on in the race, he led fellow Yamaha Andrea Locatelli as Tom Sykes took home P6 in what could be his last qualifying session in the class.
Axel Bassani was the seventh fastest rider ahead of Alvaro Bautista and the BMW of Michael van der Mark, all three different manufacturers being spread over 0.4 seconds on the same row as Tati Mercado rounds out the top 10 ahead of Chaz Davies.
