Moto3 Indonesia Qualifying: Carlos Tatay takes first pole as Aji starts from P3
Carlos Tatay takes his first-ever Moto3 front row start ahead of two rookies.
Carlos Tatay storms to his first-ever Moto3 pole position ahead of two rookies including home hero Mario Aji, it was a strong battle for the fastest lap time in the lightweight class with Tatay taking his first Moto3 pole position by just 0.083 seconds to Brazilian rookie Diogo Moreira in P2 with Aji rounding out the front row.
The Q2 session began with drama following a crash from Riccardo Rossi with Scott Ogden following suit, this derailed both riders’ hopes of scoring a top result in the session with Ogden not even setting a lap time. Over at the front of the grid Mario Aji had come from Q1 and set a strong benchmarker lap of 1’42.051 to lead the way, Tatay had other ideas though and smashed in a time that improved the P1 lap by 0.790 before improving this further to solidify his spot in P1.
Dennis Foggia would be the next rider to fall foul of the session also suffering a crash but remounted to finish up in an impressive P6 overall on row two joined by Xavier Artigas and title leader Andrea Migno.
Another rider that suffered a crash in Q1 was Sergio Garcia who led row three, he decked it in the middle of the track and was able to return to the pits before setting a Q1 session leading time to progress alongside home hero Mario Aji and Xavier Artigas and Alberto Surra. From here he pushed as hard as he could and finished just ahead his teammate Izan Guevara in P8 with Deniz Oncu rounding out the third row, Deniz Oncu in P10.
