Moto2 Valencia Race: Raul Fernandez becomes most successful rookie as champion crowned

Raul Fernandez takes his eighth Moto2 victory as Remy Gardner wins the Moto2 title.

Raul Fernandez has won his eighth Moto2 race putting his all into the final round of the season achieving his part of the bargain of battling for the Moto2 championship, for the rookie it wasn’t to be as Remy Gardner has been crowned the 2021 Moto2 World Champion finishing in tenth securing the number of points required.

The Moto2 race was pretty chaotic in the early stages with a red flag on lap one following a crash involving Xavi Vierge, Marco Bezzecchi and Lorenzo Baldassarri laying oil down on the track then a restart without the pole position starter Simone Corsi thanks to a technical problem. The opening laps were more like a Moto3 race with Raul Fernandez exchanging places with Fabio Di Giannantonio and Augusto Fernandez, Celestino Vietti and Aron Canet also making some very scary moves a bit further behind to keep the nerves at an all-time high.

Further back Remy Gardner was chilling like a snowman around the P10 mark dropping some places running at P11 at one point, for Remy he knew he just needed to stay cool, calm and collected and take home a top 13 finish to be crowned the champion regardless of where Raul finished and that was exactly what he did.

Back to the front the fight calmed down with Raul Fernandez following Fabio Di Giannantonio and Augusto Fernandez for most of the race before Raul Fernandez overtook the Gresini rider Fabio Diggia for the win with four laps to go, leading every lap until the chequered flag officially crowned him as the vice-champion only four points from the championship, a stellar season for the rookie who is now the most winningest rookie in history in both the 250cc/Moto2 championships, a record that will be very difficult to beat!

Joining him on the podium was Fabio Di Giannantonio and Augusto Fernandez with Celestino Vietti taking a stunning P4 finish ahead of Aron Canet.

Further back down the order Remy Gardner was crowned the champion, he and father Wayne becoming only the second-ever father/son champion pairing in history.
